“Nine of the 10 S&P 500 companies paying the highest dividend yield, including mostly energy firms like Oneok (OKE), Williams (WMB) and Exxon Mobil (XOM), are outperforming the index so far this year, says an Investor’s Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSmith

ETFs tell the story. The largest high-dividend yield ETF, the $32.6 billion in assets Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (VYM), is up 3.9% this year. That’s edging out the 2.7% gain this year by the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY). Keep in mind though, there’s lots of ground to make up. The VYM is up just 55% in five years, which is roughly half the 107% gain of the S&P 500…”
