How You Can Get Started in a Business Career (and Why You Should!)

The term “business” is broad. It can describe anything from administrative jobs to executive careers. But, one thing is true across all business positions: the skills you learn are universally adaptable. In other words, no matter where you begin a career in business, it opens you up to opportunities in other sectors.
Types of Jobs Available
So the big question remains. That is, “What types of jobs are classified as a business?” A business career may be any number of types of positions. Accounting, clerical, management, record-keeping, and many others all fall under the scope of business.
Education
Many business-type jobs will require a degree. This is to ensure that you have the skills necessary to master the challenges that will come your way. Fortunately, you no longer have to spend 30 hours or more each week at a brick-and-mortar institution to earn your master’s degree in business. There are many reputable (and accredited) academic options available online, meaning you can pick and choose your coursework according to your schedule.
Should I Look Into An Internship?
Many college students look forward to their junior or senior year and applying for an internship. But, what is an internship, and do you need one? An internship is essentially a short-term job, often with a sought-after company. You are paid to work for a fixed period in your area of study. Monster explains that an internship can help you expand your resume and also works in your favor as an extended job interview of sorts. Furthermore, some major corporations actively seek candidates that have successfully completed an internship within a similar organization. Your college admissions counselor can help you look for internships in your area.
Minorities In Leadership
As a minority, there are many compelling reasons to seek a career in business. An important one is that you’ll have an opportunity to lead. This is crucial for organizations as diversity ensures greater appeal to a larger customer base. Further, according to the American Psychological Association, some minorities are perceived as better leaders. This might be due, in part, to having greater empathy for subordinates that are struggling in the workplace.
Minority Entrepreneurs
It is not just beneficial for large businesses to have minorities in leadership positions, having persons of color, women, and people with disabilities as entrepreneurs boosts the economy overall. Minority-owned businesses contribute to the job market and can help close the still-present racial wealth gap. For consumers, having access to minority-owned businesses often means being exposed to products and services relating to a new culture.
If you’re thinking about a career in business, you don’t have to be boxed into one particular arena. The vast majority of your skills will translate well as you work your way into the job or entrepreneurship opportunity of your dreams. Remember, education is key and, as a minority business leader, you are in a unique position to bolster the economy and help improve conditions for minorities throughout the US.
