“This Republican senator [Rand Paul] is leading the charge against Trump’s tariffs”

“…Paul has made the case against tariffs to his colleagues in closed-door meetings, according to several senators, where he’s argued that tariffs are a tax that will burden Americans with higher prices. It’s a widely shared belief among Senate Republicans — although few are willing to be as vocal as Paul on it, hoping to give Trump time to make deals with individual countries to lift the penalties.

“Tariffs have also led to political decimation,” Paul told reporters recently, referencing the devastating political fallout Republicans faced after levying tariffs in 1890 and in the 1930s — after which they lost the House and Senate for most of the next 60 years. “They’re not only bad economically, they’re bad politically.”…”

Rand Paul is a doctor. You go to doctors to ask about medicine. You don’t go to doctors to ask about finance. In the 1890’s America was a tariff based system. (Which is not the case today) The tariffs levied might have been to high. Also I can’t find any information saying the tariffs didn’t work as intended. 1890’s History below:

“…Irwin also calculated that if sugar were excluded from import calculations, tariff revenue actually increased by 7.8%, from $170 million to $183 million. He concluded that the tariff hastened the development of domestic tinplate production by about a decade but argued that the benefit to this industry was outweighed by the overall cost to consumers…”

So you mean to tell me increasing production by over 10 years is a failure? NO! Learn history. Just because Americans voted against their best interest does not mean the tariffs “failed.” Now for the 1930’s argument. The great depression was caused by the Federal reserve not tariffs.

What have we learned today? Do not ask a doctor about economics. Ask him about medicine.
